A Pilgrim and a Stranger is from Paul Gerhardt, next to Luther, the greatest hymn-writer of all time. Gerhardt was a children's tutor and became a beloved pastor in Berlin. However, he was forced out of the parish because he would not concede anything to the Calvinists. He finally got a small parish. He lost his wife and all his children but one. He wrote Sacred Head Now Wounded and many other great hymns.

KJV Romans 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; 8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness. 9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. 10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; 11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; 12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; 13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. 14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not. 15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. 16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

KJV John 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. 3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. 4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. 5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. 6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins [GJ -10 gallons per firkin] apiece. 7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

Viet Dietrich Prayer, Epiphany 2
Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank Thee, that of Thy grace Thou hast instituted holy matrimony, in which Thou keepest us from unchastity, and other offenses: We beseech Thee to send Thy blessing upon every husband and wife, that they may not provoke each other to anger and strife, but live peaceably together in love and godliness, receive Thy gracious help in all temptations, and rear their children in accordance with Thy will; grant unto us all to walk before Thee, in purity and holiness, to put all our trust in Thee, and lead such lives on earth, that in the world to come we may have everlasting life, through the same, Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

Power and Efficacy of the Word

KJV John 2:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

Background

Readers have assured me that they never heard of the efficacy of the Word until they began reading my posts and books. I was drawn into studying the topic from many Old Testament courses I took, from books on Judaism, from Luther's sermons, and from the Book of Concord, Melanchthon, Chemnitz, and Gerhard. Most importantly, the almost complete absence of teaching efficacy - even in Greek dictionaries - was appalling in current sources. What is rare is even more attractive, no?

This Gospel lesson is a perfect example of the Word's efficacy, or effectiveness, or from the Greek - energy. The Son of God turned ordinary water into extraordinary wine.

Who attended the wedding?
At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus and His disciples were invited to a wedding. His mother Mary was there, probably as a relative and as a substitute for the parents. Thus Jesus honored marriage and did not distain it. Avoiding marriage became a Roman Catholic fetish, so this miracle is a swipe against non-Christian practices, celibate priests, nuns, bishops, and popes.

The disciples were there for the first miracle and served as witnesses. When their faith faltered later, they could always look back and think about the miracle they all experienced.

3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

Luther suggested that Mary's leading role came from the absence of parents. This was a poor couple with not enough money to pay for the basics at their wedding. That was uncomfortable for the guests, like having warm tapwater when some event is being celebrated today.

It is important to emphasize that the Word will act upon an inanimate object - or as Luther wrote - God gives us first what is difficult, tiresome, painful, and disheartening. Or - we look at it this way. Nothing is too beautiful - man will turn it into a heavy burden, a task, a dishonor. I have said, quoting someone else, "Where else can one speak 20 minutes or more without interruption?"  Yet sermons are such a burden to pastors that they copy verbatim from someone else.

God has given us marriage between a man and a woman - and people avoid it or constantly complain about it. Over time, God allows difficulties of the worst kind. And when children have special problems, it can seem to be a very bitter set of years. Yet God gives us the bad first so we how it is transformed into the best by His power.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. 5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

This has been seen as Mary instructing the Son of God. She simply told Jesus what the problem was. This is a clear subordination of Mary to Jesus. Jesus used the term "Woman" twice in the Gospel of John. Mary turned the matter over to her Son, through the servants. People want to give orders to God, the time, place, and method. God is not bossed around, and Luther pointed out that we should be patient and subordinate ourselves, not God.

31. To turn water into wine is to render the interpretation of the Law delightful. This is done as follows: Before the Gospel arrives everyone understands the Law as demanding our works, that we must fulfill it with works of our own. This interpretation begets either hardened, presumptuous dissemblers and hypocrites, harder than any pot of stone, or timid, restless consciences. There remains nothing but water in the pot, fear and dread of God’s Judgment. This is the water-interpretation, not intended for drinking, neither filling any with delight; on the contrary, there is nothing to it but washing and purification, and yet no true inner cleansing. But the Gospel explains the Law, showing that it requires more than we can render, and that it demands a person different from ourselves to fulfill it; that is, it demands Christ and brings us unto him, so that first of all by his grace we are made in true faith a different people like unto Christ, and that then we do truly good works. Thus the right interpretation and significance of the law is to lead us to the knowledge of our helplessness, to drive us from ourselves to another, namely to Christ, to seek grace and help of him.

I vicared in a church which was grand beyond measure. The pastor preached about the Gospel and aimed his message that way. It was the largest Lutheran church in Canada. Now it is mostly an apartment complex for low-income people. Their website is about the personality of the pastor and their good works, not about the Gospel.

Many of us have gone through difficult times that seemed to never end. I learned to find the spatula quickly and use it to clean the floor effectively. What now seems minor can be experienced again with laughter and nostalgia. Many say, "If only I could hug _____ one more time. But now is the time for people around us, people with special needs.

Mankind's way is to get the very best for themselves and end up with the bitter, cheap wine. People will say, "They had all the glory but look at them now."

God reverses this with the example from His Son, Who received hatred and scorn, torture and death, the crowds mocking Him.

11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

Why not in Jerusalem? Jesus raised Lazareth from the dead, just outside of Jerusalem. The leaders and the crowds knew it, and reacted with murder. That always reminds me of this statement from Luther -  "The Holy Spirit is so powerful that He can take the greatest evil into the greatest good, as He did with Jesus dying on the cross."

32. Therefore, when Christ wanted to make wine he had them pour in still more water, up to the very brim. For the Gospel comes and renders the interpretation of the Law perfectly clear (as already stated), showing that what belongs to us is nothing but sin; wherefore by the law we cannot escape sinning. When now the two or three firkins hear this, namely the good hearts who have labored according to the law in good works, and are already timid at heart and troubled in conscience, this interpretation adds greatly to their fear and terror; and the water now threatens to rise above the lid and brim. Before this, while they felt disinclined and averse to what is good, they still imagined they might yet succeed by their good works; now they hear that they are altogether unfit and helpless:, and that it is impossible to gain their end by good works. That overfills the pot with water, it cannot hold more. This is to interpret the Law in the highest manner, leaving nothing but despair.

33. Then comes the consoling Gospel and turns the water into wine. For when the heart hears that Christ fulfills the law for us and takes our sin upon himself, it no longer cares that impossible things are demanded by the Law, that we must despair of rendering them, and must give up our good works. Yea, it is an excellent thing, and delectable, that the Law is so deep and high, so holy and righteous and good, and demands things so great; and it is loved and lauded for making so many and such great demands.

This is because the heart now has in Christ all that the Law demands, and it would be sorry indeed if it demanded less. Behold, thus the Law is delightful now and easy which before was disagreeable, difficult and impossible; for it lives in the heart by the Spirit. Water no longer is in the pots, it has turned to wine, it is passed to the guest, it is consumed, and has made the heart glad.

KJV Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. 3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

KJV Luke 2:41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Prayer - Viet Dietrich

Lord God, heavenly Father, who in mercy hast established the Christian home among us: We beseech Thee so to rule and direct our hearts, that we may be good examples to children and servants, and not offend them by word or deed, but faithfully teach them to love Thy Church and hear Thy blessed word. Give them Thy Spirit and grace, that this seed may bring forth good fruit, so that our homelife may conduce to Thy glory, honor and praise, to our own improvement and welfare, and give offense to no one; through the same, Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

Background for the Sermon on Jesus in the Temple

The Two Natures in Christ, means He possessed divinity from conception, even though most saw Him at first as simply human. This mystery of His human-divine nature is revealed only through the Holy Spirit in the Word. Many rely on Dame Hulda, their human reason, and claim, "If it is beyond my experience and human reason, it is impossible." These slaves of their own philosophy first eliminate certain miracles which are beneath them. Later, they eliminate all miracles and His divinity. Once He is down to their size, they promote a religion without faith and without the fruits of faith.

They remind me of the girl who said in our college class, "Dr. Levin, I don't understand this." He gulped and said, "What don't you understand?" She said, "ALL of it." Once faith in Christ is turned into a weakness or problem, the entire message is lost, no matter how much they dig for new, exciting, and dramatic insights. The old errors are repeated endlessly. They still are.

In contrast, we have in this story a insight into the Person, the God-man Jesus Christ. Although He appeared to be only a boy, Jesus's divinity came through in His discussions in the Temple. He did not need to be taught. Instead, He was teaching them.

"47 And all that heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers." Considering seniority at the Temple, it is a wonder that any scholar paid attention to a boy. But His divine wisdom could not be hidden.

Early Gospel Ministry of Jesus

KJV Luke 2:41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

The marvel of Luke is including so much information and teaching not found in Matthew. Every verse in the Four Gospels matters because the Holy Spirit is so stingy with words. That also means that we learn so much in each verse. For example, the Holy Family came to the Passover each year, a long march uphill.

Consider the lesson being taught us. The Passover and the Exodus are the prequels to the ministry of Christ, just as the Gospel of John is a commentary on the Books of Moses.
  1. Jesus is the Passover Lamb.
  2. Jesus was without guilt.
  3. Jesus performed miracles, not unlike the Exodus.
  4. Jesus provided food miraculously. John 6. Exodus 16.
  5. Jesus spoke of Himself as Living Water. John 4. Exodus 17.
  6. Jesus referred to bronze serpent lifted up. Numbers 21. John 3.
  7. Exodus 3 is Trinitarian and the Angel of the Lord reveals His Name as I AM. Throughout John and also in Mark.
Joseph and Mary brought the chosen Messiah to His official Temple each year, and yet they were peeved beyond measure that He stayed to consult with His subordinates.

43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

Galilee is downhill from Jerusalem, so a day's journey meant going back, trudging uphill with their gear, stopping along the way to search for Him. This by itself is a great lesson. We are prone to leave the Gospel behind when we are engaged in our routine duties. They were being normal parents while He was subtly revealing Himself.

The miraculous signs were many that prepared Israel for their Promised Messiah:
  • The Angelic announcement to the Shepherds
  • The Star of Bethlehem, David's city.
  • The circumcision of Jesus.
  • Jesus in the Temple as a boy, talking to the leaders.
  • John the Baptist quoting Isaiah 40.
  • The Baptism of Jesus by John.

Therefore, the people were well prepared for the ministry of Jesus. Likewise, the persecution of Christians by the Church of Rome sparked the Reformation - and even more persecution.

Every couple that has had a lost or wayward child can identify with the anxious, even furious mother and father. They had to search for three days. How could they even sleep?

Jesus was sitting in the temple area, listening to and asking the scholars questions. Could this small amount of leaven lead to Nicodemus in John 3?

49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

The mission of Jesus was far beyond human understanding. How could the parents not know His two natures and His future work? That should not shock us, because almost every portrayal of Jesus is only about His human nature. And the members are not told to start with the Scriptures but with the current programs.

Mary treasured everything in her heart and was there at the cross and with the early Apostles.

1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. 14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. 16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. 17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

Matthew 2:13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. 19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life. 21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

Suffering and Suffering-Together

1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

Peter wrote this letter after Nero turned on the Christians as the scapegoat for the burning of Rome. Many at the time thought Nero was the arsonist, setting fires so he could build a grander city and glory for himself. The Emperor Nero was one of the most evil, corrupt, and vain rulers of the Roman Empire, though picking the worst one is a difficult matter. Scholars are divided.

The Christian Faith was suspect, because it thrived as a tiny minority. Judaism had an official status; the Christians were considered related but not approved. Therefore, there were many who opposed the Christians, not realizing that persecution spread the Faith across the Empire.

Rome built a temple to all the gods - the Pantheon - and it is still standing. The religions of that age were completely corrupt and base, so Christianity seemed especially irritating to the masses.

As Jesus taught Peter and the disciples, unbelievers would hate and punish the little flocks of Christians. They were like sheep led to the slaughter. Since they had the Gospels and the Apostles, the early Christians were convinced of the Resurrection of Christ. They had the truth from the Apostles and the witnesses of the Resurrection of Christ.

The symbol of the fish comes from this era. If strangers met along the road, a Christian would draw half of a fish to see if the other one finished the drawing. If the second person drew it, the figure would indicate a message in the Greek initials IXTHUS - Jesus, the Son of God Savior.

Since they were suspect, it was not surprising that persecution could be unleashed on them. Likewise, today we should not be surprised that a pagan America hates the Christian faith and the unborn. Everything is seen in the opposite of our Constitution and religious heritage - evil is now good, and the only religion is all religions except Christianity.

13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

Sympathy literally means "suffering (pathos) with (sym)". Moreover, partakers of Christ means fellowshipping with Christ and His terrible trials and death. That is part of our early history of the English Bible. Tyndale had to work outside of England to print Bibles. It was the King's law that anyone translating the Bible into English would be killed. Tyndale was killed by a false friend and then burned at the stake to terrify anyone who might offend Henry VIII, the King of England.

When Tyndale learned of his Bible being burned, he said, "Maybe they will burn me, too." And yet, he never stopped his work. King James ordered a new English Bible because he hated the Geneva Bible (from Switzerland). The greatest language experts completed the task in seven years or less, and that KJV was almost completely Tyndale's work. Tyndale exemplified the early Christian motto - "the more you mow us down, the faster we grow." The more delicate version is "the blood of the martyrs is the sed of the Church."

What comes from eternity - the Son of God - will also remain throughout eternity. The Gospel spread throughout of the world through preaching and persecution both.

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

I often quote Lenski, who taught at the seminary in Columbus, Ohio. His commentaries and some of his books still circulate. However, he was replaced by a Biblical professor who opposed inerrancy and taught the students error and apostasy.
Lenski is described by the current WELS seminarians as "wrong on justification," as though Justification by Faith were something evil.

What mankind vilifies, God glorifies because it belongs to God. At any moment, it seems to be easy and good to go along with the gang. In the long run, eternal truths will always belong to God and last forever. That is why we give the same Bible to everyone, because it has the same truth and is most accurate. The King James does not play with words to satisfy the errors of heretics.

The Greek New Testament text of the newest Bibles (the Evil Four - RSV, NRSV, ESV, NIV) is almost exactly the same as the furtive, secretive Westcott-Hort, published 160 years ago). This makes me laugh - the secret Westcott-Hort, created for the failed KJV Revision - is constantly "improved" to get the precisely the same results!

15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

Peter warns his flock not to use persecution as an excuse to become lawless. That is the sure sign of apostasy. If one group is not happy, they begin fighting over minor matters because the basic doctrines are too scary. Pettiness leads to all kinds of useless stress. The model in the earliest days was to gather and sort out the truths from the Word alone. Chemnitz has a moving passage where he described the leaders walking around with the manuscripts, saying "These are only sources. When the water is muddy, go to the source of the spring, where it is clearest."

16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. 17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Almost daily we read of giant churches where the leadership work against the Scriptures to be more glorious. Fuller Seminary deals with students who deny the ordination of women and repudiate the inerrancy of the Bible. Willow Creek in Chicago would not purchase Bibles unless they were feminist, even though the founder was chasing women.

The time has come, as Peter warned.

18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? 19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

A large number of the faithful will replicate the faith in the believers. If everyone adopts an Anything Goes attitude, apostasy will spread and become absolutely against the Christian Faith.

We have a faithful revelation of God's truth. Some of us were aware when the Virgin Birth was denied by the RSV. Much more has happened since. Faith means believing what God has passed on down through the ages.
