Sermon Part 1 - Grape Press to Gospel Miracle
Martin Luther (b. 1483) that sums up the role of the printing press in the Protestant Reformation: “Printing is the ultimate gift of God and the greatest one.” (History.com)
England and Germany got into printing very slowly because the numbers were so small. But Luther's 95 Theses printed over 5,000 copies in two weeks (1517) Luther's prolific German established his language instead of clinging to Latin, which was the norm of scholars.
The two countries expanded printing into more languages, and more presses came from more broadsheets (one page), books, and customers. I used to ask college students about the Renaissance era highway signs and books they had at home - they didn't!
Thousand-Year Effect on the Christian Faith
Medieval communication was very limited and extremely expensive, provided only for a few volumes and mostly one language - Latin. That era can be covered from Augustine (430 death) to Luther's (1546).
Rome controlled its power, language, and dogma through the Pope, cardinals, bishops, and priests, very much like the ancient Roman armies and punishments.
KJV Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, 7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
KJV Matthew 11:12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. 15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Romans 5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Collect
O almighty, eternal God: We confess that we are poor sinners and cannot answer one of a thousand, when Thou contendest with us; but with all our hearts we thank Thee, that Thou hast taken all our guilt from us and laid it upon Thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and made Him to atone for it: We pray Thee graciously to sustain us in faith, and so to govern us by Thy Holy Spirit, that we may live according to Thy will, in neighborly love, service, and helpfulness, and not give way to wrath or revenge, that we may not incur Thy wrath, but always find in Thee a gracious Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.
Luther's Protest -
Meaning a Positive (pro) Testimony (test)
The hippies, then and now, seldom offer positive testimonies. Luther was an unusual man with great capabilities. He was trained at first to serve as a lawyer, town magistrate. But Luther was caught in a terrible storm (1505) and thought he would die. He prayed to be sent into the priesthood and he was soon welcomed into the very strict Augustinian order which comforted him in many ways.
Luther's father did not want a priest for his father, and later made a point about his son having children. (Luther thought about having children and Katherine von Bora sealed the bargain, 1525.)
The early Luther (monk and priest) immersed himself in obeying the Church of Rome and becoming obedient to its demands. But he was also among many who compared the Scriptures against the Vatican, raised at Wittenberg University into the professor's job of teaching the Bible itself rather than a thousand years of fog and disorder.
Justification by Faith in Jesus Christ
Many of us - though not enough - have labored to teach Lutherans what the so-called leaders have tried to force - the truth of the Apostle Paul and Luther against the ELCA-LCMS-WELS-ELS-CLC...and some other sects. All of them insist - one way or another - that the entire world has been absolved of all sin, without faith, in Jesus Son of God.
The Apostle Paul was furious, as he wrote, that
Galatians 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
What about forgiveness? Is forgiveness there without the Good Shepherd, without the flock trusting, believing, loving the Savior? And yet clergy are shocked that they are without a genuine Gospel, without members!?
Nothing is more comforting than forgiveness through faith in Son of God. People can go through great turmoil with humility and trust in Jesus. In most cases, one person asks for forgiveness, which makes the other partner ask forgiveness as well.
An abundance of forgiveness rests upon the Lord Himself, because
5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faithinto this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
I said it before - "Everyone wants access," and that was more than two thousand years ago. So the only grace we have is by faith in Jesus.
Where are all therapeutic methods without faith in Him?
Where are the magical chemicals, guaranteed for success?
Where is peace when the storming billows fall around us?
Say unto my soul, I am thy Salvation: The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth.
He delivereth them out of their troubles: He is their God forever and ever.

Nineteenth Sunday After Trinity
O mighty and everlasting God, who by Thy Son Jesus Christ didst mercifully help the palsied man both in body and soul: We beseech Thee, for the sake of Thy great mercy: Be gracious also unto us; forgive us all our sins, and so govern us by Thy Holy Spirit, that we may not ourselves be the cause of sickness and other afflictions; keep us in Thy fear, and strengthen us by Thy grace that we may escape temporal and eternal wrath and punishment, through Thy Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.
KJV Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil. 28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
KJV Matthew 9:1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. 2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. 3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. 4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 7 And he arose, and departed to his house. 8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
From the Prison in Rome - Paul's Teaching
KJV Ephesians 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
We do not usually think so much about how Biblical passages are written. This is a special one, which seems to be written in Ephesus, but was written in the Rome prison. Paul was a long distance away from Ephesus and wanted to strengthen that city's faith and the province around it, because Paul's work had spread so much in the past. This was a farewell address filled with wisdom and carefully written.
So he is saying to that large province, "Do not return to the ways of paganism, as if the Faith no longer mattered and the behavior of the past took over again." Americans know from experience that the improvements of the Christian life can be overwhelmed and demolished by laxity and falling away from the worst conduct and conversations. Can we sing real Christmas carols to grade school students, with their parents watching and singing along? No, but the crudest things are paraded as something new, different, and disgusting.
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
We can guess that much of Christianity was pushed away when areas of the Faith were attacked, imprisoned, and lost. But the Gospel came back, often from persecution and spreading the texts in many languages. Paul knew that they had great forces against them in paganism and yet also in the power of the Word.
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
This is the power of God's Word, which is always at work in us. People may resist and oppose the Scriptures but the revelation of God remains the same. That is no less than the teaching of Jesus the Son of God, which takes away our sins and gives us new life.
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
The genuine believer is not based on outward gestures and claims, but honesty and truthfulness. There can be misunderstanding for many different reasons. Dishonesty increases problems. Paul says - "putting away lying." Anyone can say, "Lying and lying back will only increase hardship and bad will." But in contrast, "Saying I am sorry decreases friction and long-lasting ill will."
26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
Anger is often promoted as getting even, which seldom benefits both sides at the same time. The other person is clearly the major fault, as we think to ourselves or we say out loud. But the Holy Spirit responds through Paul - "and sin not." And an even greater and beneficial answer comes from "let not the sun go down on your wrath." Yes, it is easy to seeth vividly all night, or for weeks, or for years.
Giving neighbors roses and flowers can do a lot to soften attitudes and brighten smiles. One man said about a glass with a flower, "What's that for?" I said, "Mother's Day." He said, "I'm not a mother." I said, "I am pretty certain you had one. This is to honor her," Other responses are very grateful and some are neutral in appearance. We finally had a long, hard rain on the roses yesterday. Today they are the Queen of Sweden and Enchanted Peace.
27 Neither give place to the devil.
We are much more inclined to give place to the devil - another way to avoid the problems coming from our excuses. We may think our response is justified by gettin- even, but justification by gettin-even throws flames on the fire.
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
Ending of Ephesians 4
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

KJV 1 Corinthians 1:4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; 5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; 6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: 7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: 8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
KJV Matthew 22:34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. 35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. 43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? 46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
Eighteenth Sunday After Trinity
Lord God, heavenly Father: We are poor, miserable sinners; we know Thy will, but cannot fulfill it because of the weakness of our flesh and blood, and because our enemy, the devil, will not leave us in peace. Therefore we beseech Thee, shed Thy Holy Spirit in our hearts, that, in steadfast faith, we may cling to Thy Son Jesus Christ, find comfort in His passion and death, believe the forgiveness of sin through Him, and in willing obedience to Thy will lead holy lives on earth, until by Thy grace, through a blessed death, we depart from this world of sorrow, and obtain eternal life, through Thy Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

KJV Matthew 22:34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
There is an old custom in Jewish debates, to see which one has the best response. That is just as true now as it was before the era of Jesus. When a woman at the supermarket bumped into my cart with her mechanical one, she said with humor, "I have a doctor." I said, "I have a lawyer" and everyone laughed. We then had a debate about nutrition.
Jesus had the upper-hand, and doubtless people sensed that quickly. Jesus radiated the love of His actions, His works, and His love for others. We are alien in some respects in getting things done rather than loving God first. That should be forever on our minds but that is a challenge. My delight is in hearing and saying those things which are the Scriptures. I get out my extra large print KJV New Testament and over chapters of Revelation and one other book. Revelation 13 is the center of all human knowledge - the time before the birth of Jesus and the growth of Christianity around the world. Love for God flows over to love for our neighbor.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. 43
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? 46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
Truthfully, nothing is more obscure and wrong than the errors piled up against the Christian Faith. They are practiced in the most twisted way as well. One famous minister with a large church. He stayed where he could "enjoy" a combination of Asian paganism. Ignoring his desire to stay there as a big star, he said, "I am just here to pray and to meditate."
Here we have in this wonderful land of freedom, centuries experience with freedom, prosperity, and a Constitution rather than royalty and servility.

KJV 2 Corinthians 3:4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward: 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; 6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: 8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? 9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory. 10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth. 11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

KJV Mark 7:31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. 32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.
Luther: 2. First, the story or example before us is good in itself, for here we see that many persons received the poor man, as though his distress were their own, bringing him to Jesus to be helped. By this, both faith and love are shown to us. Faith, in that they had heard of the Lord before, that he was kind and compassionate, and helped all those who came to him. For the Word must first have been heard, and must first have entered the human heart, showing us the mercy of God in such a way that we depend upon it.
First of all, this miracle is understood - completely wrong. To understand that, we have to work on the errors of the early 20th century, which is when the KJV was revised by "scholars" like Westcott and Hort who mocked and distorted the original text. Two themes began to build during that time (1887 onward). One was Roman Catholicism and the other was rejection of the miraculous in the New Testament, especially in Mark's Gospel. This miracle story is a good example of people today being puzzled and avoiding the story. The response is negative even today, although the text is quite plain.
Jesus brought the miraculous to the Decapolis, which is where the pigs went berserk and the Syro-Phoenician woman was healed (Lenski). Thus it makes sense that the crowds already had faith in Jesus, so they knew what the Son of God could do. Notice that in our times people look upon their churches with charts, future successful programs, and and expensive advertising. We can easily find photos of enormous buildings emptied because their growth miracles flopped.
The crowd believed because two great miracles had moved them to help this man. Miracles worked for the demoniac and the woman. They had confidence with Jesus, confidence meaning "with faith."
33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; 34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.
Perfectly clear!Jesus put His fingers into the deaf man's ears. The man could not hear and could only be alarmed or confused. People often respond to this negatively, although many a mother or doctor has used a little spit. The deaf man was not very useful until Jesus healed the ability to speak. What burdened the man was simply his hearing and his speaking, but that was everything.
36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it. 37 And they were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well; he maketh even the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
Jesus commanded the crowd to keep the miracle to themselves. This created a paradox. Jesus wanted to limit the crowds because they were so excited and eager for more. However, Jesus had a specific time table, because He knew all that would happen.

We are dealing with a lot of technology now, as everyone knows. I began as a vicar leading some of the worship at St. Peter in Kitchener, broadcast over Eastern Canada. My sainted cousin complained because I did not signal him during the lection. I scratched my nose briefly from that time on, and he was pleased. I also introduced the Governor General in the same place.
Everything was manual up to a point, when we used a telephone to reach others from the Bethany Chapel, New Ulm. That led to a video camera (Phoenix) weekly for the Meyer clan and others. Blogging was less expensive than mimeographs and other tools of the Stone Age. Video services changed from the most blurry and ad-filled to Vimeo to Zoom.
