KJV Romans 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
KJV Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Lord God, heavenly Father, we most heartily thank Thee that Thou hast caused us to come to the knowledge of Thy word. We pray Thee: graciously keep us steadfast in this knowledge unto death, that we may obtain eternal life; send us now and ever pious pastors, who faithfully preach Thy word, without offense or false doctrine, and grant them long life. Defend us from all false teachings, and frustrate Thou the counsels of all such as pervert Thy word, who come to us in sheep's clothing, but are inwardly ravening wolves, that Thy true Church may evermore be established among us, and be defended and preserved from such false teachers, through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.
Deceit Always Feels So Good - For a Short Time
KJV Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
This is one of the most famous statements in the Bible, even in world literature. "Beware" literally means "look out for," which we often say about food in the store, or used cars, or politicians, or cheating football teams. People say - "Be wary of..." The image is portrayed many similar ways - a soft, white sheepskin worn as the cloak over a wolf, whose muzzle is dripping in saliva, eyes bloodthirsty. Parts 1 and 2 of Matthew 7:15 go together, like the salesman who said he could give the church a copier for free. He went over the script many times, even getting a bit angry with me for being so stupid. Not long after that someone said to me, "I hope you didn't fall for that free copier scheme. It is a big scandal."
The source for this warning is the Old Testament. The faithful prophets were killed by furious people who did not adhere to the Word of God. False prophets were loved, honored, and praised.
We have this problem today, not only in the gigantic and short-lived super-congregations, but also in denominations. The obvious, boastful mainline denominations of the National Council of Churches (which brought you the RSV, NRSV, and ESV Bibles) also praise their own Sodom and Gomorrah policies. Add to the list - ELCA, which forged the 1987 merger this way with quoatas, but also WELS, which made that a policy in their college and also with Time of Grace's Pastor Novotony, who followed Mark Jeske. These denominations are enjoying catastrophic failure while hanging onto their royal income, perks, and benefits.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
People make fruits a narrow topic - figs, grapes, apples, oranges, bananas, watermelons, but the word is bigger than that. Seeds provide fruit through flowers. As one Scott's Lawn and Garden executive said, "Grass flowers, too. You just don't notice it." We would not call Polycarp "Fruity" today - but rather "Fruitful." Weeds grow like crazy, winding around the plants and flowers I am trying to grow, and weeds are sterile from our perspective - productive but not tasty or beautiful.
We farmers know the difference, so also believers must as well.
John Deere now rejects toxic DEI.
This is especially clear, because fruit come from the Spirit at work in the Word, while works never go past the level of weeds. Entire world religions concentrate on works while fruits come from the living Seed - the Word. Every so often I find a weed that has grown up, almost overnight, and is 6-9 feet tall, so I cut it at the base, making the remainder shrivel up. Enormous winding vines start with fragile stems and get easily snipped with scissors.
The basis for fruitfulness among Christians is not working hard or proving success but faith in Jesus Christ. Starting with something - like "do you know who my father is?" - or, "look at my church's growth!" - will lead nowhere in God's Kingdom and God's Heaven. False teaching is like decoy weeds - which suggest potential but end up being a menace.
The Bible is complex and rather long, with the Old and New Testaments wound together and woven together. As I teach my graduate students, the Old Testament is the foundation for everything in the New Testament, and the New Testament is derived from the entire Old Testament. Both are interwoven, which is why so many want to study the entire Old Testament and see this phenomenon for themselves.
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
KJV John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. 30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? 31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
John's Gospel fills in the irony of the Sermon on the Mount, because the Fourth Gospel enhances the message of that great Sermon. They must believe on Him! And the crowd, not yet believing says, "Which miracle will you show us so we can see and believe it. Top the manna miracle to prove it." Jesus responded in John 6 - not Moses but God Himself. So they said "This is a hard saying!"
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
The future is grim for those who carry on like magicians with cloaks, costumes, and magical canes (for the fakery). Now they have cassocks, albs, crosiers ($700+ crosses), mitres ($645 fish hats), chasubles ($2,000), rings ($2,000 to $4,300), and
pectoral crosses ($2,000 to $7,300).
This passage is toward the end of the Sermon on the Mount, the ending - The House on the Rock, which is the foundation of believing and teaching the Word. And that is the great blessing of the Lord. No matter how grim things might be, we are kept sound and safe by the Foundation, not our own deeds. That is clear in the confrontation with Jesus and Peter. "On This Rock I will build My Church," where Rock clearly means an enormous rock ledge while the name Peter is related but means pebble. Jesus did not establish the Christian Church on one pebble, the pope, but on rock ledge of His Creation.
Fourth Amendment - US Constitution Bill of Rights
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
This is one of the most important of the inalienable rights in the Bill of Rights. These rights are born with us, not given to us or taken away from us. It is an everyday action we should and must honor. A warrant is a reason to ask someone to be searched, even at the exit of a store. I ask them, "What is the Fourth Amendment of our US Constitution?" Few can answer that, which is an opportunity to teach them the Fourth Amendment. A warrant is written reason or a formal reason to ask for a search. Not objecting to the search (having no reason to endure one) is the same as welcoming the search. Since most are unaware of this priceless part of our United States, it is good to keep it appreciated and honored.
When a police officer stopped us in a tiny town on an empty street he ended up asking if he could pet Sassy Sue, who adored everyone. He heard that we were low on gas and drove ahead of us to the gas station - a very nice experience for someone going the wrong way on a one way street. I think it was Nah-VAY-dah. I was excruciatingly polite, of course.

KJV Romans 6:19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
Lord God, heavenly Father, who in the wilderness didst by Thy Son abundantly feed four thousand men besides women and children with seven loaves and a few small fishes: We beseech Thee, graciously abide among us with Thy blessing, and keep us from covetousness and the cares of this life, that we may seek first Thy kingdom and Thy righteousness, and in all things needful for body and soul, experience Thine ever-present help; through Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.
We Work Faith- God Worries
KJV Mark 8:1 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, 2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: 3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.
The sermon title is taken from Luther's ironic summary of this feeding of the multitude. They traveled away from their homes, because they were drawn by the power of Jesus' preaching. They had faith in Him because they heard Jesus speaking God's Word rather than clinging to the laws of the scribes and Pharisees.
When the disciples sought to understand, Jesus said in John 6.
27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
What did this enormous group of people do? They followed Him to the point of starvation. They could be near a water source, but that was nothing when they had no more food and water was not enough. We were driving north in Arizona when I realized we were very short on fuel. Finding a town was difficult enough, bright gasoline signs were present but abandoned. The feeling of dread built up...and finally a little town showed up with a working gas station. People may not be lost on a desert highway, but they can be terrified of the unknown.
Jesus had compassion for the thousands of people.
1 Peter 5: 4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. 5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
Our human weakness is to be overflowing with care, but it is God's nature to care for us.
Jesus explained to the disciples,
The crowd has nothing to eat, after three days following Him.
They have nothing left to eat.
If they go home now, they will collapse from hunger.
Many came from a long distance.
His disciples pointed out that the resources were not there.
4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these
men with bread here in the wilderness?
So they were saying that feeding the multitude was impossible, just as skeptics, rationalists, Objective Faithless Justification gurus, and seminary professors do now. Bethany Lutheran Church started in a rental hall in New Ulm, where we were not welcome. We found land, but we had no money. Mortgage money was offered, much to the shock of others, and we soon had hymnals, an organ, chairs, and a do-it-yourself chapel. The building materials were provided from out of town gifts.
4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.
This is a case of the disciples worrying rather than having faith in God Himself, Creator of the Universe. The work of God is faith in Jesus Christ, Who - throned in glory - deals with us through His angels.
My friend in the doctoral program at Notre Dame was an expert on angels in the Bible, writing a 300 page dissertation on the topic. Our supervisor would not even look at it, since the professor was a Tillich-Barth fan. He was distressed over his daughter's extreme disabilities and his lack of income. Christina and I said, "You are not getting help dealing with your daughter's disabilities?" We explained the process and some days later, Charlie came into the lounge area and knelt before Christina. He was overwhelmed with joy. His daughter would be supported and he could finish the PhD. He was worried sick and despairing.
The Good Shepherd provided. KJV Isaiah 40:11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
6 And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.
Jesus gave thanks to God, broke the bread, and gave the loaves to the disciples to distribute. Seven loaves would not go far, yet they multiplied. That abundance is not only real but also a stumbling block to those drunk on human reason. They throw out the excuses and dismiss the power of God. They reject God in favor of other gods.
7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. 8 So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.
Jesus blessed the fish as well, which meant that the famished followers were not only given bread to satisfy their hunger but a bonus of protein and oil to give them energy on their journey back. So people ask today, "Why did the disciples question how a little food could help the 4,000?" There were many miracles, which were aimed at the present, to encourage the disciples and early believers, and the future, for us. And we fall into the same doubts about what God can do and where we are going ultimately.
9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.
Many empires rose and fell between the time of Christ and us. The Romans did not realize that they were at the peak of power - as an empire - falling apart slowly, only to shut down when the Eastern Greek Empire fell apart - Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453.
Our Founders were very rise about the future, seeing so many problems in the kingdoms of that world. Britain went to war to keep America as a vassal state, paying taxes, taking away the guns and rifles of the citizens. That is why the Second Amendment is so high on the list of inalienable rights. Inalienable means that no one has the right to take them way - ever. No Congress or state or local government can take way something inherently ours.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
What people do not value will be taken away by force, over time. so we must continue in the virtues established by our Founding Fathers.

Sixth Sunday After Trinity
Lord God, heavenly Father, we confess that we are poor, wretched sinners, and that there is no good in us, our hearts, flesh and blood being so corrupted by sin, that we never in this life can be without sinful lust and concupiscence; therefore we beseech Thee, dear Father, forgive us these sins, and let Thy Holy Spirit so cleanse our hearts that we may desire and love Thy word, abide by it, and thus by Thy grace be forever saved; through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.
KJV Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
KJV Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. 21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: 22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. 25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.
Better Than the Best
KJV Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
This verse is striking for, especially because we attended the Sunday service at Willow Creek Community Church, and this was the sermon verse. Lutheran pastors were saying in public that they were paid to go to Willow Creek and learn great insights. The service ended with the food court waiting for us, just outside the sanctuary.
I hate to admit this - a number of Lutheran clergy are still at Willow Creek in their heart of hearts, searching for that go-to gimmick and failing in their misery. The Biblical answer was in front of them and in their ears, but not in their hearts. Faith in Christ = righteousness. Most people will admit that the primary (common) definition of righteousness is being very good, almost perfect, being known for great work$, therefore perfect and beyond all criticism.
Better than the Pharisees means faith in Christ. I noticed that, in the hushed crowd at Willow Creek, the former world-class preacher denounced the audience for not coming to the Wednesday service, where the "real worship took place."
Faith in Christ means having access to God's grace. The standards of the world and Gospel pretenders imagine righteousness, Oh! - better than the best.
Jesus is numbering stages of aggravation, based on how we behave. The Pharisaical rules are carried out today with swiftness and brutality. At the mainline denominational level, those who are not "sensitive, inclusive, diverse, etc" are removed in various ways and shunned.
The "conservative" Lutherans do the shunning and excluding, based on whether that person is loyal to their brand or not. The stink-eye (the opposite of the right hand of fellowship) is a warning that demands bowing, scraping, begging for a chance to fit in. At the Walther level, members and pastors must swear to being forgiven and saved before they were born, as WELS-ELS claim, "guilt-free saints in Hell." And you thought magicians were clever and devious!
As Jesus confirms with those stages of the Law, the best way is not completing the offering - which is an act of obedience - and instead - promoting forgiveness on both sides. In other words, our gracious nature is far more important than a visible or financial act.
I think there is hyperbole [exaggerating to prove a point] in Jesus' lesson and Luther's sermon, both teachers good in stirring us up about these matters of hostility and lack of forgiveness. Our world has unraveled over the last century, and most of us can identify the marks of this decay, especially lately. Comedians are mean, nasty, and disgusting. Films and books have fallen into decay. New music is painful to hear and obnoxious in many ways. Politics? Oy!
The best of works come from faith in Jesus Christ, Who admonishes us in many ways, but teaches sin in the simplest way - "not believing in Him."
There are many harsh statements in this lesson, and they are easily understood. They are the backdrop of the primary, the substantial, the divine nature of the Christian Faith, which begins and continues with the Savior.
KJV John 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The very first amendment is Freedom of Speech, which was derived from the persecutions in England and Europe. Bloody Mary persecuted the Protestants and some kings were secret Roman Catholics. This was so important to those who sailed to America that they made this the most important inalienable right, that is, a right which cannot be changed or removed from the Constitution. It is beyond debate though it has been ignored by many who would love to abolish it.
